Megacyclops viridis (Jurine), Macrocyclops albidus (Jurine), and Acanthocyclops vernalis (Fischer) were raised in the laboratory at six temperatures (5, 8, 10, 12, 15 and 20°) and fed a mixture of ciliates (Paramecium caudatum and Colpidium campylum). Data were taken on clutch size, embryonic development time, interclutch period, time to first clutch, sex ratio and longevity.Clutch size, time to first clutch, embryonic development time, interclutch period and longevity are inversely related to temperature. In the rat small intestine, the glycosylation changes which normally take place at the weaning period are characterized by a shift from sialylation of fucosylation. The introduction of dietary fibers at weaning is one of the more striking nutritional modification so that some authors have suggested that the presence of fibers and the development of colonic fermentation might be important for the development of the small intestine, as for the colon. In order to define the respective contribution of ontogenic and nutritional factors to the intestinal glycosylation changes at this period, some aspects of the intestinal glycosylation were studied in five groups of rats (16-day-old suckling rats, prolonged nursing 23-day-old rats, 23-day-old rats weaned at day 19 with either a fiber-free, a cellulose or a pectin diet). Intestinal glycoproteins of suckling rats are characterized by a low fucose content and a high proportion of mannose. The amounts of the neutral sugars (fucose, mannose and galactose), expressed either per gram of intestine or for one intestine, are alwars higher in the fiber-fed groups than in the prolonged-nursing group or the group fed the fiber-free diet. Activities which promote fucosylation process (GDP-fucose production and fucosyltransferase activities) and those which are opposed to fucosylation (endogenous inhibitor of fucosyltransferase and GDP-fucose pyrophosphatase) are strongly modified in opposite ways at day 23 as compared to day 16. These modifications depend on the age of the animal (ontogenic factors) with additional modifications induced by the dietary factors. In particular, similar sugar contents and patterns are obtained with cellulose and pectin diests though the enzymatic activities of the fucosylation pathway are very different. No correlation was found between the caecal content of short chain fatty acids and any of the parameters under study. Thus, dietary fibers induce metabolic changes in the small intestine glycosylation in short-term experiments independently of colonic fermentation. Besides, these results point out that the consideration of fucosyl-transferase activities alone are not sufficient to predict glycoprotein fucose content and that other regulatory sites are involved. This study quantitatively documents the progressive development of sexual dimorphism of the vocal organs along the ontogeny of the goitred gazelle (Gazella subgutturosa). The major, male‐specific secondary sexual features, of vocal anatomy in goitred gazelle are an enlarged larynx and a marked laryngeal descent. These features appear to have evolved by sexual selection and may serve as a model for similar events in male humans. Sexual dimorphism of larynx size and larynx position in adult goitred gazelles is more pronounced than in humans, whereas the vocal anatomy of neonate goitred gazelles does not differ between sexes. This study examines the vocal anatomy of 19 (11 male, 8 female) goitred gazelle specimens across three age‐classes, that is, neonates, subadults and mature adults. The postnatal ontogenetic development of the vocal organs up to their respective end states takes considerably longer in males than in females. Both sexes share the same features of vocal morphology but differences emerge in the course of ontogeny, ultimately resulting in the pronounced sexual dimorphism of the vocal apparatus in adults. The main differences comprise larynx size, vocal fold length, vocal tract length, and mobility of the larynx. The resilience of the thyrohyoid ligament and the pharynx, including the soft palate, and the length changes during contraction and relaxation of the extrinsic laryngeal muscles play a decisive role in the mobility of the larynx in both sexes but to substantially different degrees in adult females and males. Goitred gazelles are born with an undescended larynx and, therefore, larynx descent has to develop in the course of ontogeny. This might result from a trade‐off between natural selection and sexual selection requiring a temporal separation of different laryngeal functions at birth and shortly after from those later in life. culture of a variety of insect organs and cell lines of defined origin which have kept certain properties of the parent tissues.
Tissue culture approaches have been useful for studying hormonal control of morphogenetic processes. Cell lines are particularly
suited to the study of hormonally regulated mechanisms of macromolecular biosynthesis and gene expression. Thus, the value
of in vitro analysis in studies of regulation of hormone production is now recognized. Results obtained from tissue culture
allow more precise definition of the hormonal requirements of insect cells and tissues for growth and differentiation and

The development and evaluation of a two-session laboratory class, based on Geneswitch technology and sex determination in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster, is described. Geneswitch system allows conditional control of gene expression. A laboratory exercise has been devised for sophomores in order to illustrate how Geneswitch technology can be used to conditionally over-express the key sex determination gene transformer (tra) during development, and how this inhibits sexual differentiation in males, resulting in a lack of much of the external genitalia and a reduction in the size of the sex combs. Reported herein is the ability of Scedosporium apiospermum, S. aurantiacum, S. minutisporum and Lomentospora prolificans conidia to adhere, differentiate into hyphae and form biofilms on both polystyrene and lung epithelial cells. To different degrees, all of the fungi adhered to polystyrene after 4 h, with a predominance of those with germinated conidia. Prolonged fungi–polystyrene contact resulted in the formation of a monolayer of intertwined mycelia, which was identified as a typical biofilm structure due to the presence of a viable mycelial biomass, extracellular matrix and enhanced antifungal resistance. Ultrastructural details were revealed by SEM and CLSM, showing the dense compaction of the mycelial biomass and the presence of channels within the organized biofilm. A similar biofilm structure was observed following the co-culture of each fungus with A549 cells, revealing a mycelial trap covering all of the lung epithelial monolayer. Collectively, these results highlight the potential for biofilm formation by these clinically relevant fungal pathogens. 相似文献
